A still taken from a Jazeera TV report about an anti-government protest in AlexandriaSunday’s public holiday to commemorate the 40th Anniversary of Egypt’s war with Israel (6th October) saw some security incidents and casualties including fatalities, but the media noted the railways remained unaffected:

Extremely tight security cordons sealed off Cairo Central on 6th October to prevent any attempt to gain access to the station. Elsewhere no infringements or acts of trespass or blockage were noted by the ENR Operations Centre and the trains booked to run between Alexandria and Benha, and Qena and Aswan all operated normally.

One website noted a Jazeera TV report about peaceful anti-government protests on trains in Alexandria:

The ‘Youths against the Coup’ movement organised a flash demonstration on Monday inside trains on the Alexandria suburban line to Abu Qir. They were protesting about the killing of dozens and injuring of hundreds during Sunday’s 40th Anniversary commemoration of Egypt’s 6th October War and calling for those responsible to be prosecuted.

Finally, thieves can make easy money by selling stolen track for scrap metal. Although the police caught this gang, the track will still have to be relaid and tamped, adding to the ENR’s catastrophic losses so far this year. From various sources earlier this week:

Under the leadership of Brigadier Tareq Agiz, Criminal Investigations Director at Kharga police station in the New Valley district, police were able to apprehend thieves stealing track from the Luxor-Kharga line. In the third such incident in recent times, the police stopped a truck loaded with 135 steel rails and weighing a total of 30 tonnes. The case has been handed over for further investigations.
